• SKY700 Kite Review (2nd July 2006)

When I first laid eyes on this little kite, I was amazed how compact the packing was. How could a 120cm kite fit into such a small space? Well it did, and it included two 40 metre flying lines!

I opened up the kite and found 3 vivid colours staring at me, red, yellow & blue. The quality of the kite was exceptional (for the price), with the kite manufactured from ripstop polyester.

The lengths of flying line are more than adequate for the kite, possibly a little too long. The quality of the line is acceptable given the cost, however does leave an area for improvement.

The kite is very easy to setup once the 2 bridle lines connected to the fixing points are disconnected. The lines can then be attached to the bridle using a larks head knot. This method of packing helps prevent the kite from becoming tangled and ensures the kite is kept in good shape until its next flight!

Flight 1
Location: Park Land
Wind speed: light breeze (value not measured)

With the kite setup and ready to fly, my other half lifted the kite into the air. With a small gust of wind the kite lifted into the air. I pulled the lines back and down, filling the parafoil air pockets as the kite lifted higher and higher. I managed to fly the kite for about 2 minutes before the slight breeze turned to still. At this point the kite came to a hault, folded in on itself and fell gently out of the sky without too much tangling.

Flight 2
Location: Beach
Wind speed: mid/strong wind (value not measured)

No help was needed to launch the kites this time as the breeze was stronger. I just lay the kite out in front of me, gave it a gentle tug and watched it rise up into the sky. It stayed hovering quite steadily above me in the zenith if I wanted it to, or I could steer it down into the power zone and try a few tricks. The wind got stronger as the afternoon went on and I really put the lines to the test as the pull increased, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the lines as they did not fail on me.
